Casual Vacancy

The first adult novel by J.K. Rowling.

Long description

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

A little let down

The Casual Vacancy was a let down.It was rather boring and tedious, up until the last chapter. I suppose I was expecting more from the Author.

Vivid Characters and moments of Brilliance

I have not read Rowling’s Harry Potter series but just had to read this to get a glimpse of a mind that has made millions [of British Pounds] out of writing. I found Casual Vacancy to be, if anything, an indictment of the UK educational [schooling] system, the National Health Service and the morals of the times. Sure, the characters are “vivid” but there are just so many of them to remember from one sitting [reading] to the next. I came away thinking that Rowling has failed to unhook herself from the past BUT then again, why worry when there’s more than enough in the bank! Hey, there are moments of brilliance here …
