Riaan Cruywagen

Consequently, this book is nothing more than that - stories about my life and career as I relive and remember it, written in the same way that I speak. Sometimes I interrupt myself and wander off, but that is an old Cruywagen tendency I inherited from my father. Here and there, there may be some apocryphal material, but that is limited to stories I have taken on hearsay. I am not making excuses for them, as I am passing them on to you the way they were told to me. As the news-people always say jokingly, Why spoil a good story with the facts? It is quite often the case that people who are in the public eye also stimulate the curiosity of that public. On reading this book, everyone will know exactly where and how I grew up, who my parents and siblings were, where I went to school and studied, and more. In fact, after this it should not be necessary to grant media interviews, because there will be nothing left to say. It is thanks to the SABC that I could follow a fulfilling career in broadcasting, and that I became of some renown. I did not strive for fame; that came with the job. Neither did I consciously compete in the popularity stakes; all that I did was to do my job, to the best of my ability. I have an aversion to awards, for which you have to nominate yourself. In my opinion, your employer should submit examples of your best work for acclamation, if it's good enough. That is why I absolutely refused to enter the SABC's Artes Awards of the day. The dozen or so awards that I received were all, without exception, bestowed on me spontaneously by organisations outside of the SABC. At the time of writing this book, I have been in the broadcasting industry for 47 years, of which the first ten years were in radio and the rest in television. By looking at the TV news rosters, I have calculated that I have presented the news on television more than 7 000 times - and I am still learning. My sincere thanks and appreciation goes to all the radio listeners and television viewers who have let me into their homes and tolerated me over the years.

Additional Info:
