Shantaram

In 1978, gifted student and writer Greg Roberts turned to heroin when his marriage collapsed, feeding his addiction with a string of robberies. Caught and convicted, he was given a nineteen-year sentence. After two years, he escaped from a maximum- security prison, spending the next ten years on the run as Australia's most wanted man. Hiding in Bombay, he established a medical clinic for slum- dwellers, worked in the Bollywood film industry and served time in the notorious Arthur Road prison. He was recruited by one of the most charismatic branches of the Bombay mafia for whom he worked as a forger, counterfeiter, and smuggler, and fought alongside a unit of mujaheddin guerrilla fighters in Afghanistan. His debut novel, SHANTARAM, is based on this ten-year period of his life in Bombay. The result is an epic tale of slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison torture, mafia gang wars and Bollywood films. A gripping adventure story, SHANTARAM is also a superbly written meditation on good and evil and an authentic evocation of Bombay life.

Shantaram

Read it. You won't be sorry. One of the best books I've ever read. Lots of food for thought.

Shantaram

Amazing story, told in a very humble way. A must read for everybody with open minds.

Absolutely brilliant!

Quite possibly the best book I have ever read.

This book is certainly interesting and full of fascinating details about life in India. the only problem I had was that you get the definite impression that the author is rather egocentric and although the story was really interesting and I was so taken with all the characters, I found the that main character was irritating the heck out of me by the end - but hats just me - can't stand men who are too full of themselves

A Masterpiece

This is the most profound book I've read in a long time. The writer has lived his life to the full, experiencing good & bad and has lived to tell this most captivating tale. I've experienced every emotion whilst reading this wonderful story. Brilliant!!

Absolutely Brilliant, A Masterpiece!

Without a doubt Shantaram is the greatest book I have ever had the privilage of reading, you will laugh, you will cry, your jaw will drop and your heart will soar! Thank you Gregory David Roberts, your magnum opus touched my life in a very profound way! The only negative is that this 950 page book is just too short, An absolute tour de force!! A sequel please...

One of the most captivating reads that will greatly impact all readers. life altering undoubtedly

Excellent read

Based on the life of the author. About an escaped convict from Australia hiding in India. Interesting story. Some parts will make you feel like crying, and at other times you'll laugh out load. I do find India very interesting though.
