I could not wait to read this instalment of the Cross series! Cannot put the book down (am still busy reading) but have reached the point where the two sisters are taken from the Cayman Islands. I find the violence extremely graphic and must admit I am going to skip these few pages. This said, I love Wilbur Smith's books!
Wilbur Smith always grabs your attention from the first page. As with "Those in Peril" I found this book disturbing as the violence was very graphic and leaves you horrified that people can even think of doing such awful things! The characters are great and the story so compelling that you simply have to read it to the end in spite of that!
I love action packed books as much as the next guy or gal but I have to say that this is the first time I felt myself cringing whilst reading a book and almost closing my eyes for fear of what I would read next. The writing is as always brilliant but extremely graphic. The story starts off Hector and Hazel blissfully happy and unaware of the danger that lies in wait for them. Hazel has a baby on the way and the first few chapters really give you an insight into their relationship. The only major problem I have is that Hector seems to move on rather quickly after Hazel's demise given that she was the love of his life. The story is a rollercoaster ride from one country to the next and also from one enemy to the next. The murders are gruesome and would make a grown man cringe. Is the trip it takes you on worth the while? I for one couldnt put it down and read through the night until it was finished. Did I feel better afterward? No. This book should come with a warning of its graphic descriptive nature as there may be a an unsuspecting reader out there who picks it up and faints away in the middle of the night from sheer fright. All in all in great read mainly because it is extremely well written.
