Chicken Run

Trouble is brewing down on Mrs Tweedy's poultry farm: the chickens are revolting and clucky hen Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha) is planning her latest coop, um, coup. Getting one or two birds out of the farm is no problem whatsoever. Unfortunately, Ginger plans to get everyone out at the same time, and when one of the would-be escapees happens to be kind-hearted but bird-brained Babs (Jane Horrocks), well - Ginger is fighting a losing battle. Despotic owner Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) plans to turn the birds into the tender filling of her new range of homemade chicken pies, and is waiting until the hens have fattened up. Ginger knows that time is of the essence but every daring scheme ends in disaster. Ginger needs a miracle. And fast. As she contemplates her next escape attempt with Scottish engineering genius Mac (Lynn Ferguson), Ginger sees their salvation in the form of a rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson): if the cocksure Rocky can teach all of the hens how to fly then they can all fly out of Tweedy's clutches before she gives them the chop.

Unlike anything ever seen on the big screen, CHICKEN Run is the year's most original comedy hailed by critics and audiences alike as "magical entertainment for all ages!" While the chickens on evil Mrs. Tweedy's farm dream of a better life, a clever hen named Ginger is hatching plans to fly the coop - for good! The only problem is, chickens can't fly...or can they? Every escape attempt goes fowl until Rocky, a smooth talking All-American rooster, crash-lands into the coop. It's hardly poultry in motion when Rocky attempts to teach Ginger and her fine feathered friends to fly...but, with teamwork, determination and a little bit o'cluck, the fearless flock plots one last daring attempt in a spectacular bid for freedom! Featuring unforgettable characters, incredible animation, and all-star voice talent, this instant classic from Academy Award winning creators of Wallace & Gromit is eggs-traordinary fun for the whole family!

Quotations:

Rocky Rhodes the Rhode Island Red Rooster:" Now, the most important thing is, we have to work as a team, which means: you do everything I tell you."

Babs: Morning, Ginger, back from holiday?
Ginger: I wasn't on holiday, Babs. I was in solitary confinement.
Babs: Aww... it's nice to get some time to yourself, isn't it?

Ginger: You mean you weren't the pilot?
Fowler: Good heavens, no! I'm a chicken! The Royal Air Force doesn't allow chickens behind the controls of complex aircraft!

Verdicts:

"It's smart and charming, a family film in the best sense -- a multi-layered feast where all ages will find much to enjoy."
-- Bob Aulert, CULTUREVULTURE.NET

"There is something wonderfully improbable, anachronistic and quixotic about Chicken Run."

    Roasted to perfection

Another hit from the Wallace and Gromit creators at Aardman, Chicken Run has more than enough charm to last the film. A quirky parody on The Great Escape, this stop-motion animation will delight all ages with it's British sensibilities and witty humour.

A comedy drama set on a Yorkshire chicken farm in 1950s England, the story follows the turbulent romance between Rocky the Rooster and Ginger the chicken, both of whom yearn for freedom and are planning a daring "prisoner of war" style escape. Both chickens are tired of being repressed and know they face an eventual certain death, so in planning their escape, they rally with their fellow chickens. Quite witty dialogue.
