Its been 8 months since I purchased a Leappad for my kid, and its still one of the tag along toys. I like that I'm able to monitor her progress and set the device to a level that she is comfortable with. Yes you need to buy app cards to bump up the device but I see this as an investment in my kids development. I downloaded eBooks, and my 4year old is spelling and reading while having fun. I recommend using a generic screen protector (like the mobile phones) as greasy hands is almost a given and small scratches could destroy the touch screen. At first use it is a bit complicated for younger children but once they become familiar with the Leappad their creativity is endless, with the built-in camera combined with the stamp and paint function... wow
To buy the games for the LeapPad you need to buy a voucher. To buy a voucher you must have a USA address. At this stage you are stuck with the games that come with the console which is really not worth the R1000+ price tag
I agree with Unknown from Cape Town, my daughter also have the Leapster Explorer now for over a year and it was the best buy ever! She is continuously playing with it and her maths too has improved. I will defnitely buy the LeapPad because she can use all her current games from the Explorer and like all other console games you have to pay to get a game! Nothing is for free anymore. Santa will defnitely leave a LeapPad under our tree this year!!
Before SD from Cape Town shoots down the Leapster LeapPad,they should be aware that nothing in life is free and if they did proper research they would know that by purchasing a Leapster Leaplet Card available on Kalahari.com for R179.95, they would be able to download two of the apps from Leapster. My 5 year old daughter have been using her Leapster Explorer for almost a year now and I am amazed at the maths she's doing, the letter recognition and writing and loads of other skills she has picked up playing games like Tinkerbelle, Penguins of Madagascar, Mr. Pencil, Disney Princesses also games all purchased separately. I recommend the Leapster Explorer to all my friends and since the new LeapPad can use the game cards from the Explorer I'm sure Father Christmas will leave a LeapPad under the tree!
I found this report on HelloPeter.com. I cannot vouch for how accurate this report is but take care and do your homework before purchasing this product....I was about to buy it when i read this. ****** "I bought the LeapPad, with this awesome marketing on the net. They indicate that they have over 100 apps available for download assisting your child to start reading and writing. Play games etc. They never indicated all apps would be for your own account (Did have an incling though). The real kicker is that because we are not from America, we can't order the content,... not even via credit card and downloading the content. If that's the case,.. why export the rubbish to South Africa. This thing is utterly useless without being able to buy and install new software titles for your child. They did respond to my complaint by directing me to the same stupid website where I cannot purchase anything online. WHAT A TOTAL RIP-OFF!!! I now sit with a device that I paid for (worth over R1,000), and it's just lying on the table. Please do not buy this product! It's a total hoax! ****** Again, i cannot verify the facts as I did not buy it but take care.
