A beautifully filmed melodrama concerning the generation gap clash at its’ worst as a stern, forbidding, grieving fisherman father and his bookish son clash and collide time and again. The son eventually proves his worth to his father only to have his worst fears realized when his terminally ill girlfriend succumbs to leukaemia, but this tragedy forces him finally into manhood.
Wild Season was based on an idea by Emil Nofal after making the documentary The Ever Free to pay tribute to the harsh, unforgiving life endured by those who earn their living on the sea: an equally harsh and unforgiving environment where every high wave could spell death and disaster for those onboard a fishing trawler.
Beautiful cinematography by Vincent G. Cox, A.S.C, haunting music by Roy Martin and acting from the cream of South African entertainment all add up to a very memorable viewing experience. This is also known to be the film which gave Emil Nofal’s partner Jans Rautenbach his first chance at directing a film, and which lead to Emil Nofal permitting Jans Rautenbach to direct Die Kandidaat.
