10 + Years 100 + Buildings

Short description

10+ years 100+ buildings – architecture in a democratic South Africa is premised on its companion 10 years 100 artists – art in a democratic South Africa in which ten art critics each nominated ten artists for inclusion.

Long description

10+ years 100+ buildings – architecture in a democratic South Africa is premised on its companion 10 years 100 artists – art in a democratic South Africa in which ten art critics each nominated ten artists for inclusion. It differs insofar as all architectural practitioners were invited via the South African institute of architects to submit work for consideration. Given the determining influence of bio-climatic factors on architectural expression, the submissions were grouped into six geographic regions. Esteemed academics from those regions were called upon to review the projects worthy of inclusion. Based on their recommendations, the title documents the most influential projects since South Africa's transition to democracy and includes work in the public, institutional, educational, health-care and residential domains. The 450-page title is fully illustrated, consists of 8 introductory articles, a conclusion and 100+ scholarly citations on each of the submissions. Every citation is accompanied by biographic data of the design and construction teams, as well as a bibliographic synopsis. 10+ years 100+ buildings is an indispensable reference for both students and members of the architectural profession, but is also readily accessible to the broader public. The title is likely to change the threshold of architectural awareness in the country due to its collective impact and scholarly content. It will undoubtedly stimulate debate and future publications of this nature.

2010 COROBRIK SAIA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE and COROBR
Reviewed by South African Institute of Architecture from Johannesburg on 13 October 2010
24 of 48 people found the following review helpful:

Each of the 100+ scholarly citations that deal with the submissions is accompanied by biographical data of the design and construction teams, and a bibliographical synopsis. The book is an indispensable reference for students, members of the architectural profession and the broader public. SAIA encouraged the production of this book and acknowledge the exceptional quality of the outcome and its special meaning for architecture in South Africa. This book is manifestly meritorious. The following was noted: 1) its provenance was unusually democratic and collegial for a profession known for its competitiveness 2) its range of buildings was comprehensive – the objective was not simply to look for ‘gems’ of architectural imagination and production, but to seek out and critique buildings of social and institutional significance 3) the book has been excellently produced, the quality of its presentation befitting the seriousness of its endeavour. Each of the 100+ critiques is thoughtful, well laid out and aptly illustrated. The volume has a coherent structure that accommodates a wide range of diverse voices speaking about a great variety of buildings in markedly different parts of the country. Running through the multiple particular narratives is one organising preoccupation: how are South African architects responding to the fact that while South Africa is still deeply marked by the divisions of the past, the country is attempting to transform itself? The book provides a rich and well-organised sediment of material that will stand for years to come as both a memorial of a key period in national life, and a nutrient for creativity for future generations. The pages of this volume record conversations by South African architects among themselves at the highest critical level. It is wide-ranging in its subject matter, offers multiple perspectives and is presented in a manner that makes it accessible to a wide public, both here and abroad. The panel was unanimous that this distinctive, comprehensive and eloquent self-reflection by South African architects on South African architecture at this time of change deserves an award of both merit and excellence!
