Long description

19 with a Bullet - A South African paratrooper in Angola is a fast-moving, action-packed account of Granger Korff’s two years' service during 1980/81 with 1 Parachute Battalion at the height of the South African 'bush war' in South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola. Apart from the 'standard' counter-insurgency activities of Fireforce operations, ambushing and patrols, to contact and destroy SWAPO guerrillas, he was involved in several massive South African Defence Force (SADF) conventional cross-border operations, such as Protea, Daisy and Carnation, into Angola to take on FAPLA (Angolan MPLA troops) and their Cuban and Soviet allies. Having grown up as an East Rand rebel street-fighter, Korff's military 'career' is marred with controversy. He is always in trouble - going AWOL on the eve of battle in order to get to the front; facing a court martial for beating up, and reducing to tears, a sergeant-major in front of the troops; fist-fighting with Drug Squad agents; arrested at gunpoint after the gruelling seven-week, 700km Recce selection endurance march - are but some of the colourful anecdotes that lace this account of service in the SADF.

One of the few books that captures the true spirit of the bush war, warts and all, with no hind sight spin doctoring and tellin it exactly how the adoloscent national serviceman experienced it. Destined to become a classic work on the subject. It took me straight back to the sights, sounds and smells of Ovamoboland and my own national service as if it was yesterday!

As a former 1 Para section leader Charlie Coy 1982/83 - this is as close as a reader will get to how we experienced our 2 years - I pulled out my diaries from our bush trips, and the language, moods, daily sweat and toil, the lemon ops, the white hot temps, dust, sights and smells, the landmines (6 in 1 day for us) is all there - A trip down memory lane, if you want to go back there. Some @#$ times, some great times, but altogether I wouldn't have missed it for the world. The comaraderie with the best friends a man can get, the personal achievements and coming out in one piece on the other side, in spite of the PF's best efforts to crack us - A stark reminder that war is not a nice place to be, but if you must be there, then be with the best. A salute to the average national serviceman who went "the extra mile"
