I've read hundreds of fantasy works, and this series stands head and shoulders above the lot.

The writing is brilliant, and the characters have genuine depth. Be warned, the author is not afraid to kill off your favourite characters when you least expect it.

Without giving too much away, there is a terrible event in one of the books which had me lying awake half the night because I was so upset. I have yet to read another book that can get so far under my skin.

If you're tired of people proclaiming the greatness of Harry Potter, lend them this book.
