African alphabet wildlife and number book

Short description

Aimed at 3 to 5 year olds, this title introduces the alphabet and basic numbers and counting through the theme of African wildlife and nature.

Long description

Aimed at 3 to 5 year olds, this title introduces the alphabet and basic numbers and counting through the theme of African wildlife and nature. Fully illustrated throughout, it is a 'first' book of the alphabet and as such features several single words to represent each letter from A to Z, and wildlife themes to introduce counting. Colourful scenes of the African bushveld, the coast, night-time and river environment reinforce words encountered earlier in the title and help young children to "test" their knowledge while learning about the environment. Simple activities follow in which children can identify the animals they have seen, match animals to their shapes, identify animal hides, and learn comparisons.

There are two reasons I like this book over other alphabet books. For starters, the letters name something other than the more common ‘apple’, ‘ball’, and ‘crayon’. And secondly, it’s animal-friendly – beautifully illustrating Southern African animals, birds, reptiles, insects, wildflowers, and trees, as well as bushvelt, coast and river environments, to reinforce words. And to help young children, or adults learning English, to ‘test’ their knowledge at the same time as they learn about the environment. There are simple activities to identify the animals you see in the book, match animals to their shapes, and learn comparisons. And it would be valuable for the Grade R-3 classroom, as it has themes of ‘who lives in the river’, who lives in the sea/on the seashore’ and the like. It’s a great book for reading with an English learner; one that allows a lot of interaction between those learning and those in the know. Recommended for teachers, parents and as a resource for Humane (Values) Education curriculum.
