It is the story of small town boy who grew up during the Depression, struggled to find enough money to study science, and then made good as a businessman, spectacularly so, reaching Forbes' list of the 500 wealthiest people worldwide. His Rembrandt group of companies became a highly successful conglomerate with interests across the globe, owning brands like Cartier, Mont Blanc, Van Cleef & Arpels and Dunhill. Within decades, a family dynasty was built up, making the Ruperts, next to the Oppenheimers, one of the richest families in Africa. Anton Rupert was as one of the earliest proponents of co-habitation in justice, and he put his passion – as well as vast funding resources – into community development when apartheid was still at its height.
