Long description

"Born to Rule" tells the fascinating stories of five royal granddaughters of Queen Victoria: Alexandra, whose faith in Rasputin and tragic end have become the stuff of legend; Marie, the eccentric queen who battled her way through a life of intrigues and was also the mother of two Balkan queens and of the scandalous Carol II of Romania; Victoria Eugenie, Spain's very English queen who, like Alexandra, introduced hemophilia into her husband's family with devastating consequences for her marriage; Maud, King Edward VII's daughter, independent Norway's reluctant queen; and Sophie, Kaiser Wilhelm II's much maligned sister, daughter of an Emperor and herself the mother of no less than three kings and a queen, who ended her days in bitter exile. Rich in scope and detail, "Born to Rule" is a captivating collection of historical portraits.

  Lessons from history

This book brings to the 21st century the story of five related women who were destined to be queens. I found the story difficult to follow at times as one has to keep track of the women, their families and everyone's nicknames! But I persevered and in the end the book brought tears to my eyes. The book reminds one that even those in power have dreams and fears, like the rest of us. And it also gives a powerful reminder that it is our duty to serve the poor of our country with honour - this should not just be the arena of a queen consort or monarch. Alix of Russia, Sophie of Greece, Maud of Norway, Ena of Spain and Marie of Romania are a hard act to follow, but will inspire me for the rest of my life.
