Moving and Inspiring - highly recommended

Charlie lives in a simple corrugated iron home in Gugulethu with his working mother and grandmother. Through Charlie's recollections of the construction of their simple home, the reader is given insight into the hardships of living in an informal settlement. The author succeeds in communicating these hardships while keeping the story positive and uplifting. The heart of the story lies in Charlie's fun, fresh attitude to life in spite of his circumstances. Yet his secret longing for a more comfortable home are revealed in his simple, creative construction of his dream house from the mud outside their home after the rain. His inventive use of waste products to design a home with a lounge and a tv, a bathroom with a bath and most touchingly, a room of his own is truly inspiring. A wonderful book to read to children in the 3-9 age group as glimpse into the circumstances of how so many South Africans live.
