Long description

Children on the bridge is a dramatic story of a journey through the world of autism in South Africa, but it is also a personal and very real account that offers insight into the experiences of someone touched by this complex and unpredictable disorder. Autism has recently become extremely topical in the media. Autism South Africa estimates that 1 in 165 children may be affected by some degree with autism although very little ahs been published that relates specifically to autism in South Africa and there are many parents who have nowhere to turn when their children are diagnosed. This story provides a way across the bridge between our world and that of the people and families affected by autism, and helps us to identify and respect the differences between the ways our different brains work.

  Strong read

It's great to read a personal book about an apparently clinical or medical subject. This book, as in many other similar cases, leaves the reader with a far clearer understanding of the topic than if he / she had investigated one of the litany of quasi-scientific texts out there. Most interesting in the book, for me, was the centrality of persistant task repitition and lifestyle structure to the child's development. Children On The Bridge is a great read and offers important insights into the basics of human nature, regardless of whether you are impacted by Autism or not.

Children on the Bridge is objective and informative regarding the difficulties facing families with autistic children, but the author’s joy in “even the tiniest spurt of growth”, and her persistence in reinforcing that growth and looking for more, leave the reader with a feeling of optimism and acceptance. Miller manages to impart both experience gained over the years and her empathy for “her” children and their families, which makes this book a must read for anyone connected with an autistic child. The author’s very difficult personal journey after returning to the new South Africa and a new city, with all that such a move entails, and then slowly finding herself through work with children and families with desperate need, has culminated in a book which is, in the words of a book club friend, compelling. I read it in one sitting – couldn’t put it down.

  A compelling read

I found this book to be extremely moving, and a riveting read. While it will be of particular interest to those who have had experience of autism, it goes some distance beyond that, touching on many aspects of what it is to be human. At the beginning of her story, the author conveys the sense of displacement and alienation she experiences upon returning to South Africa from London in a manner I related to immediately, and I found myself totally immersed in her journey from that point. From a being a complete novice when the story begins, she becomes something of an expert on caring for autistic children. As she helps the children in her care to take faltering steps towards the 'normal' world, so she must herself step onto the bridge leading to the lonely world they inhabit. This is without doubt the most profound and engaging book I have read in 2006.
