CREATIVE CONTAINERS
A practical and inspirational guide to container gardening in South Africa
Nancy Gardiner
Eastern Province Herald, 12 February 1997, Julia Smith
This is surely one of the best of gardening expert Nancy Gardiner’s five books. It does what all gardening books should do – provide inspiration with clear, magnificent pictures and contain all the basic information on how to achieve and maintain such results.
There is also enough variety of striking and unusual plant combinations to satisfy requirements of all South Africa’s climatic conditions – for those who rely only on containers to bring nature’s colour to their environment and gardeners who want to use containers in overall design.

Whenever I get given a new gardening book I immediately turn to the index, then flip towards the front, checking on pictures and finally have a peek at the author.
Creative containers by Nancy Gardiner meets all my requirements. It is a well laid out, well thought out and well structured soft cover in a sensible size and format. And the technical production is matched by the content.
Nancy Gardiner needs no introduction to gardeners. In Creative containers she has taken containers, and their plants, off their traditional spot on the patio into every corner of the garden.
Divided into 11 sections, it deals with such topics as choosing a container, placing it in the garden, patio and balcony; choosing plants for flowers or foliage; trees, shrubs and climbers; special container plants, herbs and plant care and maintenance.
There is even a section on DIY containers and, which I regarded as a real plus, a table of container shapes and suggested plants for each shape.

SA gardening expert Nancy Gardiner continues to flourish after more than 25 years of writing about gardens and gardening and her latest book offers her typical great-value combination of practical tips and inspiring insights. Whether you want to use containers to make a small garden on a patio or to create focal points in a large garden, she has the answers, as well as hundreds of ideas for striking and unusual plant combinations.

Space is becoming scarcer in the modern world and as many gardens are getting smaller, with people moving into townhouses, cluster homes or flats, container gardening has become an option for keen gardeners. Containers can also be an enhancement for large gardens, if used on patios, balconies, areas around the pool or any special area.
The beautiful and sumptuous illustrations will inspire the reader. The text is easy to follow with helpful tips on every aspect of container gardening – choosing them, placing them and filling them. There are sections on the most popular container plants, divided into annuals, bulbs, trees, vegetables, etc. The last section is a detailed guide on care and maintenance. With this book as your guide, your container garden could be a paradise.
