An odd-ball armchair travelogue telling the story of a six-month donkey trek through the Transkei and along the Wild Coast of 1988. The donkeys get stolen along the way, the dogs die and the two travellers get on each other’s nerves. The narrative takes the form of a diary and the tone of voice is wry and funny, the observations made from a slanted point of view and the insights jaundiced. The tension between the two travel companions is well cast, with one gung-ho and up front and the other (the writer) penning up the rear, grumbling a bit and cogitating about the meaning of it all.
