Long description

An odd-ball armchair travelogue telling the story of a six-month donkey trek through the Transkei and along the Wild Coast of 1988. The donkeys get stolen along the way, the dogs die and the two travellers get on each other’s nerves. The narrative takes the form of a diary and the tone of voice is wry and funny, the observations made from a slanted point of view and the insights jaundiced. The tension between the two travel companions is well cast, with one gung-ho and up front and the other (the writer) penning up the rear, grumbling a bit and cogitating about the meaning of it all.

This is a fantastic read. Quirky, wacky, cynical humour combined with a fasinating tale. Wonderful unusual characters pepper the story. The love / hate relationship between the six travellers (2 men, 2 dogs and 2 donkeys)adds to the humour and the sadness felt over the untimely death of 1 brings a full range of emotions to this story. If you like Bill Bryson books or have a love of the Transkei this book is for you.
