Long description
In 1969, Robert and Margaret Gimson bought a neglected farm in rural Galicia, where he made a garden of considerable horticultural interest. In spite of the well-known pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia is a relatively unknown corner of Spain, generally regarded as a wild, wet and windy place. The life of the people, outside a few towns, was then almost as it must have been in all rural Europe in past centuries. This is an account of their experiences, their growing understanding of the people and their culture, and their observation of the changes taking place as the region gradually moved into the modern world.
Review
Antonio Lopez Lillo, well-known botanist: I have to say that seeing such a big collection (of plants) surprised me, not only for their number but for the rarity of most of the species. It was much more than 1 had imagined, and I thought that I was seeing the best private botanic garden in Spain... Charles Puddle, M.B.E., V.M.H. Until his retirement Head Gardener at Bodnant Gardens, North Wales: Anyone who had the great pleasure of visiting La Saleta will have happy memories of the great friendship shown to them by Robert and Margaret. Not only was his friendly and helpful nature extended to visitors but to the local community in which they played a full part in organising local events.
