In the zone with South Africa’s sports heroes

Short description

This book includes 17 interviews with some of South Africas sports stars (including 5 national captains and 2 national coaches) and shares the behind the scenes story of how they got into the zone; what supported them in achieving such consistently high levels of performance. The book also explores and examines the mental skills common amongst these great athletes, and allows for the reader to not only understand the 12 keys to zoning, but to begin to develop the mental skills for themselves.

Long description

In this title, several South African sports superstars are interviewed on how they 'get into the zone' - the state of performing at or beyond their potential. Each interview is followed by a skill that, learnt, practised and perfected, will allow good athletes to become great, and consistently perform at their optimum. With their Elite Athlete Development model as basis, the authors identify and benchmark 13 specific mental skills that form the foundation for high performance in elite athletes. Athletes are able to measure themselves, and then identify and target specific skills to create meaningful interventions where there is the greatest need, and coaches can assess the current mental conditioning of an athlete and then measure the improvement.

  Tangible solutions for success

First thing – I don’t usually read books about sports heroes – predominaltey because my driving desire is not to be one. This said – I was chuffed to see that this book is more about what makes these people successful – as well as decidedly normal at certain times and can be read by any person intersted in the difference between the average and the extraordinary. The field of mental preparation is one of interest to me and I will say this is one of the best books I have read on the subject. To clarify – usually I read a book like this and its full of “bounce” ,”energy” and “passion” as well as with tales of people overcoming all odds to be the best and succeed – even Tony Robbins(whose books I enjoy by the way) strays off into this style of writing when talking around these subjects – this book does not – WHICH IS TOP CLASS!!!!!. The reason I say this is the book seems to be intended for people to take some sort of lasting benefit from – something I believe it succeeds in doing through the exercises posed as well as the manner in which the authors relate the success of each person to a particular action or group of actions. The energy created in all other “ Positive Mental Energists'” books can only last a certain amount of time before it wears off - lost in the business of lives, work and other stresses.Tim and Mike have created something more lasting here which I really enjoyed and will refer back to on a regular basis. . I believe any person wanting to excel in sport and be able to handle the pressures and level of competition faced would benefit from a read through this as well and as I said before – I like the fact that it you offers tangible solutions to issues – not –“ think positively and you will succeed” – which is entirely generalist and useless and a statement which unfortunately allows to many overenergised ADD kids to make millions selling PME books One of my best buys this year - well worth the money

Factual evidence for Mind Coaching in Sport

This book has the potential to become the benchmark in Sporting Excellence. The biggest challenge Mind Coaches or Mental Skills Coaches have is to overcome the doubt in the mind of the Players, Coaches and Administrators in the Sport. This book provides pages and pages of evidence and facts through the 17 interviews. This book also addresses the biggest challenge writers have when conveying concepts - how do you make it 'real' and therefore measurable. The old saying - if you can measure it you can improve it - come alive in the book. Every player and coach in Sport should get a copy and apply it for higher performance. The book provides the evidence that Mind Coaching - does make a difference in Sporting Excellence. Watch out for a shift in Sport !!!

I run a training company called the WOW group. In our industry ROI is very hard to assess, EXCEPT for a fantastic tool called benchmarking! This book has engineered the way forward on effective benchmarking, and we have used some of the ideas in it to create meaningful benchmark tools for our business. Well done! Now maybe the Proteas, Springboks and Bafana can get these guys in and apply the principles so that we can start winning again! As the ozzies always say - it's not that SA sportsman don't have the talent - it's that they don't have the mental strength. Well done Tim - Great work!
