When Professor Godwin Sadoh, told me that he was searching for material on Ayo Bankole, to compile a book on his life and works, I took a deep breath of relief, because I knew that at last Ayo, his life and works will finally be documented for posterity, and no one was best suited to do this job than Professor Sadoh. The book is now out, and I must say that indeed, justice has been done to the life and works of Ayo Bankole. Ayo was one of Nigeria's great musicians. He was brought up in the traditions of Nigeria's Western trained musicians, through Church music, and he wrote extensively for the Church. Ayo was just starting to show his genious when he was brutally murdered by his own half brother, cut short in his creative prime, but his music lives on. This book has immortalized his works. A lot still has to be writen about Ayo, and I am happy that this book has taken the lead in opening up a discussion on the life and works of this great music genious. I remember one of his choral works titled, *"Orisa bi ofun kosi," ( see page 83) which my choir sang as a four part chorus. Ayo wrote this song in the traditional African composition style of complete parallel movement of the voices, pure cacophony, one might think, but far from it. Ayo wove this song like a basket, and in the end, every note, every sound fitted in so well that all you hear is a perfect harmony. Only Ayo could pull off something like that. He was always experimenting with weaving african stylistic elements into western elements, and coming out with a new sound. We will never know how far this practise would have taken Ayo, or what new contributions he would have made to music. I agree with Professor Sadoh that this book is a must for both scholars and students of African music. The book introduces non Africans and Africans alike into the mind of an African composer. It is a great tribute to Ayo Bankole. *"Orisa bi ofun kosi" = "The throat is the greatest god," that is, "humankind has to eat to stay alive."(See page 83) By Dr. Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko
