Last Exit To Brooklyn is Uli Edel’s screen adaptation based on the controversial best seller by Hubert Selby Jnr., initially banned under the Obscene Publications Act.
Set on the streets of Brooklyn in 1952 against a backdrop of violence and union corruption, Last Exit to Brooklyn is a brutal, yet beautifully made film, following the lives of struggling characters amid a world of poverty and despair. Tralala (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is a prostitute intent of self-destruction when faced with the prospect of love. Georgette and Regina are transvestites on the make and Harry is a corrupt union official who beats his wife at night and spends embezzled money exploring his homosexuality.
