The key challenge facing South African business is to create the conditions within which people are willing to do the work that is expected of them. They must work not only because they have to but because they want to and productivity will rise accordingly. This title explores what sort of leadership will create these conditions - leadership that not only focuses on personal excellence, but also on mobilising others. It looks at the traditional trade-off between the boss who supplies the wages and the workers who supply the labour, and explains how destructive and unproductive it is. We need to move beyond it, towards a view of leadership that empowers all subordinates, and encourages an unconditional commitment to excellence. Leadership is not a case of looking after the interest of the shareholders. It is a case of empowering and growing subordinates – the interest of shareholders will flourish accordingly.
