Review

Those who would believe that the art of fiction is moribund -- let them read Yann Martel with astonishment, delight and gratitude. Alberto Manguel The whole fantastic voyage carries hints of 'The Old Man and the Sea' and the magic realism of Amado and Marquez and the absurdity of Beckett! Yann Martel does a beautiful job. Globe and Mail (Toronto) Martel writes like a more compassionate Paul Auster. Times Literary Supplement Martel finds dazzling ways of expressing the hitherto unexpressed. Mail on Sunday Reminiscent of Italo Calvino. Independent on Sunday

  Deceptively readable

Life of Pi is possibly one of the most deceptively easy reads published. At one level, it reads like a regular novel, with a few interesting characteristics; at another, it reads with incredible depth, insight and reflection. A must read, from cover-to-cover.

  LIFE OF PI
Reviewed by Ms Margaret Kollmer from Benoni on 01 October 2006

I loved the quirkiness of this delightful book - a thoroughly unexpected tale of a young boy whose life becomes a dream - or whose dream becomes his life. The first half contains some very original perceptions and personal philosophies as Pi mellows his way through the golden days of youth until the second half when suddenly he has to grow up in a hurry when he finds himself bobbing about on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with a bengal tiger on board! Be prepared for many exciting twists and turns and be enthralled with your fingers crossed. One of the best reads of my life. Wonderful!
