An introduction to the technique of Lagartera embroidery, originating from Spain. Both traditional designs and contemporary developments are included, and there are designs for samplers, pin cushions and scissor fobs, along with borders and edges for sheets, pillowcases, clothes and wall hangings.
Long description
In this manual the Embroiderers' Guild of South Australia introduces the almost forgotten technique of Lagartera embroidery, which originates from the Spanish village of the same name. Lagartera is traditionally worked on even-weave linen in satin stitch and double running stitch. Both traditional designs and contemporary developments of these designs have been included, together with historical embroideries demonstrating the Lagartera technique. Among them are designs for samplers, pin cushions, scissor fobs, and borders and edges which may be worked on sheets, pillowcases, bedspreads, clothes and wall hangings, some highlighting the Islamic influence on this colourful peasant embroidery from Spain. Those who have conquered most embroidery techniques should find this introduction to the delights of Lagartera of interest, while novices will find small projects on which to test their newly discovered skills.
Review
Karenplatt.co.uk: The almost forgotten and overlooked Lagartera embroidery originated in Spain. Here it is deservedly brought to life again by the South Australian embroiderers' Guild. The embroidery is worked on even-weave linen in satin stitch and double running stitch. The book includes traditional designs and contemporary interpretations as well as historical pieces. Here you will find designs for samplers, pincushions, scissor fobs and borders and edges. There are over twenty designs to enjoy. An introduction and stitches helps beginners. The projects are well photographed with large line drawings and clear instructions. I really enjoyed this book - I have an affinity with Spain. The projects are a good mix and are easily adapted with a little inspiration. This 88-page book is the only one I have come across on the subject. It is well worth buying.
