Unfamiliar with their language and customs he struggles to control his first class of 55 bright girls. In this absorbing account Chris McIvor discovers Africa, finds love - and loses it - travels through the desert, along the Nile, and finally visits the war-locked region of Chad. Often in danger, and reliant on the kindness of strangers - which never fails him - he comes to love the vast area located in Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan known as Nubia, and takes the first steps towards his life's work in overseas aid.
