Short description
Highly Commended (Paediatrics category), BMA Awards 2005.
Heres a quick, portable, well-illustrated source on a full range of paediatric and neonatologic conditions! Each chapter succinctly reviews the incidence, clinical features, differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis of a particular condition, accompanied by 4 to 6 high-quality color clinical photographs. Readers will also find self-review picture tests, with answers, at the back of the book. The result is an ideal resource for exam preparation and a handy review for hospital rounds.
Long description
"In Focus Paediatrics and Neonatology" is aimed at all medical and health science students who require an introductory, low cost and highly illustrated guide to these two related specialities. The material is presented in double page spreads. The left-hand page has a synoptic and highly structured text (normally under the following headings: incidence; clinical features; differential diagnosis; management; prognosis). The right-hand page has a selection of four to six clinical photographs. "Paediatrics and Neonatology In Focus" is a convenient pocket size, and therefore ideal for quick preparation before ward rounds. Each volume also includes self-assessment material, which is extremely helpful for preparation for examinations. Because of shorter time spent in hospital by patients, and because of the decrease in time allocated to paeds in many medical curricula, students are less likely to be able to see the full range of problems associated with childhood diseases and problems of the neonate - this book will help supply that deficit.
Review
The diagrams are very clear. It is extremely useful to have the pictures on the opposite page to the text - this makes it clear for one to observe and relate to what is in the text. The book is set out in asuch a way that is easy to be read - information can easily be found. I found this a very informative book with very clera pictures of real patients (which is what students love to see).
BMA Awards 2005
The In Focus series are useful 'trigger texts' i.e. they give enough information so that you want to read further or continue your learning on the internet. The colours have been used nicely, with realistic print colours of patients, instruments and slides. The set out of the books are ideal with good, quick refernce contents, making the series ideal for students in Clinics and/or ward rounds.

A great tool in tackling paediatrics and neonatology. This handy resource presents material in a practical, easy to use format. With concise structured text, ideal for pre-ward round preparation, covering incidence, clinical features, differentials, management and prognosis. A invaluable source of clinic photographs to aide diagnosis. The book ends with a range of picture based self-assessment questions great for MCQ revision.
