Raymond Feist has written numerous fantasy books - most of them in series.
Magician makes up the first book of the 'Riftwar' saga (a series of three books; the other titles are "Silverthorn" and "A Darkness at Sethanon")
In my opinion it is the best book Feist has written and I can recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the fantasy genre. Magician can be read as a stand-alone book... you do not need to read the rest of the Riftwar novels or novels of the subsequent series. The conclusion to Magician is rounded off nicely and I often got the impression that when Feist wrote it, he was not intending to turn it into a series of books, though I have to admit I have not researched the author's intentions on this matter at all.
Feist's writing style is much easier to read than e.g. Tolkien's, but he still pays great attention to detail and the character development is excellent.
The plot is very original and dispite being fantasy remains utterly beleivable throughout.
The book has apparently appeared in two separate volumes before, though I have read only the single volume edition.
Magician is one of the best fantasy books written and I can genuinely recommend it. I rate the book 5 out of 5.

A amazing combination of the Tolkien's imagery and Lucas' imagination.
