Secrets and Lies

Short description

This work offers practical advice on achieving security throughout computer networks and explains why protecting information is harder in the digital world.

Long description

"A primer in practical computer security aimed at those shopping, communicating, or doing business online almost everyone, in other words." The Economist Viruses. Identity theft. Corporate espionage. National secrets compromised. Can anyone promise security in our digital world? The man who introduced cryptography to the boardroom says no. But in this fascinating read, he shows us how to come closer by developing security measures in terms of context, tools, and strategy. Security is a process, not a product one that system administrators and corporate executives alike must understand to survive. "This book is of value to anyone whose business depends on safe use of e-mail, the Web, or other networked communications. If that's not yet everybody, it soon will be." Stephen H. Wildstrom, BusinessWeek "It's not often that a truly outstanding book is written for both technical users and management. Fortunately, Secrets and Lies pulls off this feat rather well." Dustin Puryear, Linux.com "Schneier ...peppers the book with lively anecdotes and aphorisms, making it unusually accessible." Los Angeles Times

Review - Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a N

Book Review - Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World (Paperback) by Bruce Schneier - ISBN-10: 0471453803 / 9780471453802 For years now I have been reading the monthly musings of Bruce Schneier in the form of his Crypto-Gram (http://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram.html ) now also available on the web. (Crypto-Gram is a free monthly e-mail new@#$&ter from security expert Bruce Schneier. Each issue is filled with interesting commentary, pointed critique, and serious debate about security.) So why did I take to read and review a book that first saw the light in hard cover in 2000? Well exposure to as many editions of the Crypto-Gram creates a level of curiosity plus through Secrets and Lies we gain a bit of an insight into how this security thought leader looks at the security landscape. The author assists us in how to think about IT security, taking common terms to explain the complex workings of a digital landscape that may just be a bit too daunting to many mere mortals. Divided into three parts he firstly covers the attack landscape then moves into the various methodologies utilized in modern defensive techniques. It is within this section that technical members will find most value, but again the way that complex issues are broken down is oh so important. This allows for high level decision makers to gain a reasonable understanding of what it is that the technical grunts are up to with the limited funds that most IT budgets allow for. The third part looks at strategies ranging from vulnerabilities, the way to do threat modeling, risk assessment, the all important security policies and a section on attack trees that could be very useful for the understanding of threat modeling. All in all I would advise that you read this book followed by the second less technical Beyond Fear: Thinking Sensibly about Security (ISBN: 9780387026206) in an Uncertain World – by the same author.
