Short description
Highly Commended (Public Health category), BMA Awards 2005
This innovative resource is a bridge between an introductory survey text and a very large, comprehensive reference designed for the specialist, while retaining the best qualities of each. Its comprehensive, concisely presented coverage encompasses all aspects of the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Evidence-based treatment options are presented whenever possible, and references direct readers to more in-depth sources. Full-color illustrations and photographs, bulleted lists, and tables make information easy to access and bring the text to life.
Long description
STIs and HIV is written for those doctors starting their career in this specialty. The text presents a succinct account of the subject concentrating on diagnostic techniques, treatment and management. Throughout extensive use is made of colour photographs, drawings, lists and tables. The aim is to provide a 'bridge' between introductory undergraduate texts and the very large and expensive major reference works. Wherever possible evidence-based treatment options are given and referenced. A detailed list of further reading is also provided. Each chapter ends with clinical cases and associated questions to reinforce the contents of the chapter.
Review
This is an excellent book for anyone with an interest in sexual health, especially at the beginning of your career. It's very readable and coherently laid-out. The case histories and self-assesment make it a potentially useful learning and teaching tool[.]
BMA Awards 2005
The text deals in detail with the most common conditions seen in GUM clinics...every chapter also has a PBL-style self-assessment questions at the end, with clear and succinct answers. The layout and presentation is clear, with well thought-out diagrams and flow-charts. Good use of colour makes it user friendly as does the fact that it is fully indexed . A novel inclusion in the chapter on anti-retroviral therapy are tables with photographs of every drug mentioned...you'll be able to recognise the drug when you eventually do come across it!
