The Elephant Whisperer: Learning About Life, Loyalty and Freedom From a Remarkable Herd of Elephants

Short description

A charming, moving account of one man's race to save a herd of elephants.

Long description

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of 'rogue' elephants on his reserve at Thula Thula, his commonsense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival - notorious escape artists, they would all be killed if Lawrence wouldn't take them. He agreed, but before arrangements for the move could be completed the animals broke out again and the matriarch and her baby were shot. The remaining elephants were traumatised and very angry. As soon as they arrived at Thula Thula they started planning their escape...As Lawrence battled to create a bond with the elephants and save them from execution, he came to realise that they had a lot to teach him about love, loyalty and freedom. Set against the background of life on the reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, this is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers everywhere.

you can't help but fall in-love with the herd

Elephant lovers will love this one, light, light funny and heart-gripping. But, all in all the take home message is for everyone not only animal lovers. The devotion of the elephants to one other, learning to accept a strange elephant into the herd shows that if humans actually did that we would make the world a better place. And the people who worked tirelessly to get them comfortable shows what perseverance and devotion leads to success.

I found this a fascinating and delightful read. I was hooked from the very first page and was then pleasantly dragged through Thula Thula and the surrounding areas. Each chapter is basically a different story told by Anthony and Spence in which in most cases the elephants are the central theme.

The roller-coaster ride of emotion that one follows with the story of this herd has you crying and laughing all the way through. A truly wonderful story.
