The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution

Short description

Richard Dawkins takes on creationists, followers of 'Intelligent Design' and all those who question evolution through natural selection. In this brilliant tour de force he pulls together the incontrovertible evidence that underpins it and shares with us his love of the natural world and the essential role that science plays in its interpretation.

Long description

'It is no accident that we see green almost wherever we look. It is no accident that we find ourselves perched on one tiny twig in the midst of a blossoming and flourishing tree of life; no accident that we are surrounded by millions of other species, eating, growing, rotting, swimming, walking, flying, burrowing, stalking, chasing, fleeing, outpacing, outwitting . We are surrounded by endless forms, most beautiful and most wonderful, and it is no accident, but the direct consequence of evolution by non-random natural selection - the only game in town, the greatest show on Earth.' Charles Darwin's masterpiece On the Origin of Species shook society to its core on publication in 1859. Darwin was only too aware of the storm his theory of evolution would provoke. But he would surely have raised an incredulous eyebrow at the controversy still raging a century and a half later. Evolution is accepted as scientific fact by all reputable scientists and indeed theologians, yet millions of people continue to question its veracity. In The Greatest Show on Earth Richard Dawkins takes on creationists, including followers of 'Intelligent Design' and all those who question the fact of evolution through natural selection. In this brilliant tour de force he pulls together the incontrovertible evidence that underpins it. Like a detective arriving on the scene of a crime, he sifts through fascinating layers of scientific facts and disciplines to build a cast-iron case: from the living examples of natural selection around us in birds and insects; the 'time clocks' of trees and radioactive dating that calibrate a timescale for evolution; the fossil record and the traces of our earliest ancestors; to confirmation from molecular biology and genetics. All of this, and much more, bears witness to the truth of evolution. The Greatest Show on Earth comes at a critical time: systematic opposition to the truth of evolution is now flourishing as never before, especially in America. In Britain and elsewhere in the world teachers witness insidious attempts to undermine the status of science in their classrooms. Richard Dawkins provides unequivocal evidence that boldly and comprehensively rebuts such nonsense. At the same time he shares with us his palpable love of the natural world and the essential role that science plays in its interpretation. Written with elegance, wit and passion, it is hard-hitting, absorbing and totally convincing.

  Another Gem from Dawkins

A captivating book, from start to finish. Dawkins does a wonderful job at displaying the evidence and the grandeur of evolution. Wonderfully illustrated with beautiful colour pictures and sketches as with his previous book The Ancestors Tale. This book does not feature any attack on religion in any form. It is a gentle read that was to me a lot easier going than The Blind Watchmaker and Climbing Mount Improbable, in which the driving factors of evolution is explained in much greater detail. This book is all about the unmistakable evidence for evolution, how we all living things share a common ancestor. There truly is grandeur in this view on life and Dawkins ultimately reaches this goal in displaying that evolution is as much as a fact as the Earth orbiting the Sun. A timeless gem that should be in every home and school library to teach and inspire the young and to enrich the knowledge of the elder.

Everywhere you look there is bound to be atleast one misinformed ignont hopped up on god. The Greatest Show on Earth is a truly marvellous book - objective, articulate, informative, convincing and rife with indubitable evidence. Don't be taken aback by the poor rating given by the mentally ill buffoon before me - he is a dyed in the wool religious nut incapable of letting go his bronze age primitive beliefs.

When you read the criticism by reviewers such as Gary and Chris, you've got to seriously wonder whether they read the book at all, having clearly made up their minds about the topic based on their Christian beliefs (while ironically complaining that others "were convinced before they read the book"). Gary is right though that "your belief in God (and creation) is by faith" -- so why get so offended by the FACT of evolution? Is your faith so weak? The Roman Catholic church has accepted evolution decades ago, so I find it funny that some religious people still refuse to move on. Statements such as "that there is no incontrovertible scientific evidence [for evolution]" is simply from ignorance or stubborn unwillingness to look at the evidence. Evolution is clearly proved by a convergence of evidence from various fields of science. If you don't see the evidence, it's because you haven't looked or you only look at creationism propaganda. Look, and you'll see the plain facts, and there is no reason to think that this somehow disproves your beliefs in God. Don't let your faith blind you from the truth. You CAN believe in God while learning about the way the universe works. Anyway, I have actually read the book, and have since bought two extra copies for a friend and a family member. This is one of those books I think should be in everyone's bookshelf... It's only slightly technical in parts and I think anyone should be able to follow it easily.
