The recent introduction of the new four year LLB degree has created the opportunity to implement some fundamental changes in South African legal education. One of these changes is the introduction at first year level of a course in the basics of the law and the development of legal skills. At several universities, Roman law will be taught to students at first year level. Roman law is both foundation and basic superstructure of South African private law. This new work promotes a proper understanding of Roman legal development and is an essential study guide for students of Roman law.
