The Hobbit: The Worldwide Bestseller

Short description

This is the story of an adventure undertaken by a company of dwarves in search of dragon-guarded gold. A reluctant partner in this perilous quest is Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving, unambitious hobbit, who surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and skill as a burglar.

Long description

The classic bestseller behind this year's biggest movie, this definitive paperback edition features nine illustrations and two maps drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien, and a preface by Christopher Tolkien. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey 'there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon! The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the twentieth century.

More than seven decades ago, J R R Tolkien unlocked a magical world with the simple worlds 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...' and the rest was history. Millions of readers worldwide have already followed after its unlikely hero Bilbo Baggins to pass through elven woods, chase after stolen treasure and shiver at tales of goblins and dragons. If you really, really haven't read this highly entertaining pre-quel to The Lord of the Rings yet, then what are you waiting for??
