Long description

Uranium road provides rare insights into the history of South Africa's secretive nuclear industry. It explains how South Africa's uranium, a waste product of its gold mines, gave it entry into the exclusive international nuclear club. How the apartheid government turned to weapons of mass destruction when it started losing its grip on the country and the sub-continent in the seventies and eighties. And how current plans for the revival of the industry are nothing more than an expensive experiment with taxpayers' money. The title argues that these plans should be judged against the background of a dying nuclear industry worldwide, which has not been able to solve its basic problems - excessive cost, threats to human health and safety and long-term environmental contamination. An illustrated explanation of basic nuclear concepts and the nuclear fuel chain makes the history and arguments easy to follow.

A narrow view of a broad topic

Uranium Road is an interesting and often insightful read of a much-debated and sometimes fragile topic. The chapters are well-structured and describes the workings of the South African nuclear industry from its birth to its current state and future prospects. References to the global nuclear picture are also given as necessary. Being quite a technical and specialist topic, the author has done well to present readable matter to a wide audience. But it has to be said that there is a noteable personal agenda which is pursued wholeheartedly throughout the entire book. Sensationalist facts are often stated out of context and a lot of effort is put into applying to the readers emotions with references to Apartheid politics and photographs scattered between the text. This, unfortunately, discredits the authors attempts to present a rational presentation of a topic which deserves it and condemns it to an emotional outcry.
