Two years ago, Eva Khatchadourian's son, Kevin, murdered seven of his fellow high-school students, a cafeteria worker, and a popular algebra teacher. Long description

This title is winner of the orange prize for fiction 2005. Two years ago, Eva Khatchadourian's son, Kevin, murdered seven of his fellow high-school students, a cafeteria worker, and a popular algebra teacher. Because he was only fifteen at the time of the killings, he received a lenient sentence and is now in a prison for young offenders in upstate New York. Telling the story of Kevin's upbringing, Eva addresses herself to her estranged husband through a series of letters. Fearing that her own shortcomings may have shaped what her son has become, she confesses to a deep, long-standing ambivalence about both motherhood in general and Kevin in particular. How much is her fault? Lionel Shriver tells a compelling, absorbing, and resonant story while framing these horrifying tableaux of teenage carnage as metaphors for the larger tragedy - the tragedy of a country where everything works, nobody starves, and anything can be bought but a sense of purpose.

  Truth is stranger than fiction.

Finishing this book just days before the recent tragedy of the Virginia Tech shooting, made me realise that there is a lot to the adage that truth is stranger than fiction. It is one of the most moving and insightful books I have read in a very long time. The book explores the emotions of the mother of a school killer who had never really bonded with her child. When, at 17, he murders fellow students and a teacher in a premeditated massacre she is forced to face up to her deisfunctional relationship with her child and to try and rebuild her life when she will be forever branded as the mother of a killer. The book is written in the form of letters to her husband who also had an abnormal relationship with his son who is a socially inept, minipulative being who cares for noone. The similarities between the gunman in the recent shootings and Kevins character are almost unbelievable and if you knew no better you would think the author had modelled the character on him. I had never before considered in such depth the consequences that the parents of these school killers have to live with. Many people would be quick to blame the parents for how these children were brought up but this book puts this into an entirely new perspective. An emotional and powerful book that will stay with me for a long, long time.
