Short description

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

I enjoyed Kite Runner immensely, but this was even better. It is a beautiful story of the strength and endurance of human spirit. It is a heavy read, but the writer takes you right into the homes of his characters. One of my all-time favourite books!

This book is great from the first page to the last. I could not put it down. Its one of those books you wished you never finished. It makes you think twice about life and how we are truly blessed living in a free country.
