With the explosion of music rhythm titles such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band showing no signs of stopping, music fans are gathering an ever-expanding collection of plastic peripherals for each new title. Ultimate Band matches these titles’ addictive rhythm gameplay, but is designed to work without any extra tools, with the Wii Remote and nunchuk attachment taking the place of everyday instruments. Players can perform as drummers, lead guitarists or bass guitarists to over 30 music tracks taken from a collection of pop and rock artists.

When players first hit the stage, every aspect of their band can be created and customised from a range of character styles, including rockers, surfers and nerds. In story-mode, players can make their way up from their home basements to performances on a world stage. Players can make their way to the top either as a solo artist or with a full line-up in multiplayer modes.

Ultimate Band lets players enjoy the music rhythm phenomenon without the need for any extra musical attachments, with a wide variety of popular songs in tow.

  Excellent alternative to plastic guitars...

Sure, if you can afford the plastic peripherals to play Guitar Hero and Rock Band, go for it. Even though they are dropping in price nowadays, Ultimate Band still deserves consideration by people wanting to try those titles' rhythm game play but at a budget price. Bratz-characters aside (the eyes…what’s with the freakin eyes?!?!), what you get for your buck is a well-produced and well-presented game with quite a nice tracklist (some even originals, if I remember) and addictive game play. Using the Wiimote and nunchuck as an air-guitar, air-drumsticks or an air-bass feels quite intuitive and immersive. I never tried the frontman-mode, though, as you are not actually singing but expected to wave the Wiimote around like an idiot to entice the audience...lame! You also get a host of customization options for your characters, online leaderboards and some fun mini-games through in the mix. Not bad for a budget-title. One you can enjoy with your child, or with the child within you...without plastic instruments littering up your gamesroom!
