Amandla

Short description

Through a chronological history of the South African liberation struggle, this documentary cites examples of the way that music was used in the fight for freedom. Songs united those who were being oppressed and gave those fighting a way to express their plight. The music consoled those incarcerated, and created an effective underground form of communication inside the prisons.

This is a documentary which all South Africans should see. The international guests love this film and it is played constantly at our Backpackers Hostel. It tells us the story of music and hoe the music affected the struggle and how the struggle affected the muisc. There are eye opening sections for white South Africans at what was going on while we sat cocooned in our houses. However, it brings an understanding of the fact that people are just people, musicians are musicians and we all are South Africans. I would recommend this documentary to anyone who has an interest in the past and who truly wants to go forward into the future with a better understaning of the others point of view. Possibly not a documentary to be watched in one sitting and the beauty is that you can ewatch sections and come back for more later. If you are a south african fanatic then you won't switch it off.
