Short description
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made screen history together more than once, but they were never more popular than in this 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, directed by Howard Hawks (To Have and Have Not). Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay. --Tom Keogh
Long description
A simple case of blackmail has escalated into a series of unsolved homicides. But private investigator Philip Marlowe (Bogart) knows the common threads that tie them all together: Carmen, a wealthy young debauchee, and her big sister Vivian. These beautiful ladies will do almost anything to keep their dark secret well hidden, but does that include murdering Marlowe if he comes too close to unravelling the mystery? This version of the film contains 20 minutes of original footage never before seen by the general public! Also included is approximately 18 minutes of footage used in the 1946 theatrical release, to illustrate the vast differences between the original and re-shot sequences.
