Children Of Men

Short description

Set in a dystopian future where infertility has led mankind to the brink of extinction, a sole pregnant woman holds the key to the survival of humanity.

Long description

Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker ALFONSO CUARÓN creates a startling vision set two decades into the near future—and sends a wake-up call to the world of today—with the mesmerising thriller Children of Men. Children of Men envisages a world one generation from now that has fallen into anarchy on the heels of an infertility defect in the population. The world's youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set against a backdrop of London torn apart by violence and warring nationalistic sects, Children of Men follows disillusioned bureaucrat Theo (Clive Owen) as he becomes an unlikely champion of Earth's survival. Theo is approached by Julian (JULIANNE MOORE), once his partner in both love and war, she is now the head of a covert group fighting for the rights of the remaining refugee population. Theo must obtain transit papers for Kee (CLARE-HOPE ASHITEY), a young woman within her organisation who must be seen safely out of the country. However, Kee is more than just a refugee…she is someone others are willing to die for. She is, in fact, eight months pregnant and now stands as the miracle the whole planet has been waiting and hoping for. In their race to sanctuary from both anarchists who will risk everything for a cause and those who would use her child for political gain, Kee and Theo become the unlikely champions of a future generation.

All out war in the future

This movie featured at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2007, but I unfortunately missed out. Rented it the other day on dvd, and found it to be truly of "festival status". It is a chilling and disturbing look at the near future, with a fascinating storyline, and riveting acting perfomances by Clive Owen and the luscious Julianne Moore, with a wonderful cameo part by Michael Caine. I consider it one of the best futuristic thrillers I've seen in the last couple of years, almost in the league of the brilliant "Blade Runner", and that takes some doing. It's hit-in-the-stomach stuff, not for the fainthearted, but a movie experience of substance.
