District 9

Long description

From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).

With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed... only to be exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg. Now, one lone human discovers the mysterious secret of the extraterrestrial weapon technology. Hunted and hounded through the bizarre back alleys of an alien shanty town, he will discover what it means to be the ultimate outsider on your own planet.

I'm very skeptical of movies that generates high expectations and then don't deliver. It’s a good movie that is fresh, different and most of all unpredictable. What the critics didnn’t mention is that the movie is extremely violent and cruel with lots of torture scenes. I would not recommend it for sensitive viewers, chilren and would slap at least an age restriction of 18 on it for violence & language. Some of the aspects that I thought were totally cool were the weaponry, the robot like weapon, the lead character (Wikus van der Merwe) who curses in Afrikaans even though the movie is English (just loved it), the fact that an Afrikaans person is portrayed as the hero of the movie, Christopher’s (one of the alien’s) son & the fact that it was shot in Jo’burg does give you a sense of pride. They (the director/producer) didn’t have a major budget, but in my opinion that didn’t give a disadvantage at all, it just upped their game. The movie starts of documentary style, but before you get the feeling of wanting to get up and leave it goes into movie drive major time. There are some really cool action sequences which are set against a very drab/winter looking Johannesburg. You would have to be totally dof not to recognise the relevance/undertones of the apartheid era especially in the beginning, but thankfully it doesn’t hammer on that particular issue. It also has a sad undertone the more you identify with and have compassion for the lead character/s. It’s not totally blood and gore, as there are some funny moments just to break the seriousness of the storyline. Wikus is a normal Afrikaans family guy who holds a normal position with Multinational United (MNU), that is until he is given the task to lead the eviction/relocation of millions of aliens (Prawns) to District 10. He comes into contact by accident with an alien substance with devastating, life altering consequences. When faced with despair and hopelessness he seeks and receives help from an unexpected ally. I would recommend watching it, but it is definitely not a movie that I would want to own or see again.

  Proudly South African

After being annoyed with Mr Bones 2 (the annoying, uncalled for americanisms that should not be in local films) made me vow to NEVER watch a South African film again. A good friend asked to me watch it, I eventually gave in and decided to give it a try. I was expecting South African's to be imitating the annoying american accent, and I'm happy to say they didn't! I think the movie is brilliant, and shows what South Africa can actually do. I hope the SA film industury carry on being local, cause look what they managed to do here.

The reason why the main charachter has a better South African accent than Di Caprio, is because he is a South African. Other good South African accents can be heard in 7de Laan, why not check that out, you may find the acting brilliant.
