Domino

Short description

Based on the true story of Domino Harvey (Keira Knightley), daughter of film actor Laurence Harvey. Tired and unsuited to the pretentiousness of her high-society LA life, Domino leaves the glittarti behind and sets off to become a bounty hunter. She quickly falls under the wing of veteran hunter Ed Mosley (Mickey Rourke) and his crew and becomes an unlikely natural in the art of bounty hunting. But things really heat up when a gang of masked men begin a series of armored car heists, and before long the mob, a crazed TV producer, the FBI and a terminally ill child have all got caught up in the crazy situation.

Long description

The already larger than life story of Domino Harvey (daughter of British actor Laurence Harvey), a former Ford model turned bounty hunter, takes on mythological proportions in Tony Scott's fast-paced action thriller; fashioned from a script by Donnie Darko writer/director Richard Kelly.

Unfolding in a non-linear fashion as bloodied Domino (Keira Knightley) is interrogated by iron faced officer Taryn Miles (Lucy Liu), the film traces the trajectory of Domino's tumultuous life. Beginning with the death of her father Domino develops into a hard nosed, scrappy young woman who trains with nunchucks beside her mother's luxurious pool and responds violently to anyone who crosses her.

Bored with the runway and the glamorous LA life, Domino shows up for a bounty-hunter seminar. Catching the "teachers" of the seminar as they try to cut and run with the proceeds, she manages to win their respect and joins their team. This consists of Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke), the tough-as-nails leader and Domino's surrogate father, and Choco (Edgar Ramirez), an impulsive Venezuelan who harbors a not-so-secret love for Domino. The three form a kind of family, working under Claremont Williams (Delroy Lindo), who "plays Charlie to their three angels." For a time they are unstoppable, even agreeing to let the slimy Mark Heiss (Christopher Walken) produce a reality-TV show about them, which is hilariously hosted by Beverly Hills 90210 stars, Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green. But when Claremont orchestrates a complicated inside job in order to raise the money for his granddaughter's doctor bills, the precarious balance within the trio is disturbed. Tom Waits stands out in a cameo as a wise wanderer who advises the lost bounty hunters.

  not for the faint-hearted

This story is a rollercoaster of extreme proportions. The incredible life and times of of the real Domino Harvey could not be told in a fairy-tale manner. This movie hits you straight between the eyes with an over-the-top interpretation of what her life might have seemed like as she was living it. The Direction by Tony Scott is racey and edgy enough to bring to mind the often quoted phrase on Barney Simon's late night alternative radio shows ... "if it's too loud, you're too old". If you get motion sickness, don't watch this one. If you were expecting the Keira of the Pirates trilogy, you'd best shy away too. I found it to be a refreshing change from the usual treatment of "every-day heroes", and an exciting lesson in the art of movie making. Don't miss the director's commentary!

  Unsubtle and just HORRIBLE
Reviewed by Miss Melanie Diesel on 29 December 2006
225 of 495 people found the following review helpful:

Domino is just AWFUL! With the worst script, director and leading actress in history it plumbs the depths of badness. It's right down there with "Showgirls". The character of Domino Harvey is never explored, and she was a real person. The movie could have been so much better. In the hands of a decent scriptwriter, restrained directing and a decent actress it could have been interesting. As it is, the script veers between laughable and awful, the direction overblown and over the top and Keira Knightley wears just one expression throughout the movie. Miss Knightley really needs to go back to acting school before taking any more roles where she has to stretch herself. Yes, she's pretty but that's not enough to secure lead roles. When you think of decent actresses working today that don't get good material (Chloe Sevigny, Sarah Polley, etc) it's ludicrous that Keira gets to work with the people she has. Tragic.
