Although this film has been accused of being overly sentimental, it makes up for its flaws with strong comedic overtones. Hanks is brilliant! And the film won 6 Oscars out of 13 nominations... I own this DVD, and would recommend it to any serious film collectors.

Can't agree more with Mr Kritzinger's comments way back in 2004, I thought I was the only one being irritated by this melodrama and constant fluttering USA flags. Must be the most idiotic movie ever to receive the ultimate reward. It's put me off chocolate for a long, long time.

I am probably going to offend and shock half the world's population by stating the following: Forrest Gump is feeble once you really start to analise it. I must admit, I ENJOY it everytime I am made to watch it, but deep down its extremely lame and forced.Maybe my sceptism is because Tom Hanks irritates me beyond belief in Forrest Gump. The whole Amererican dream of "you can succeed no matter how stupid you are" makes me almost violently ill. From Vietnam, to "have a nice day"T-shirts, Elvis and Lieutenant Dan its one big ball of yawn.We are basically put through a journey of America's history and how even a simpleton like Gump can triumph in adversity. If I hear that "life is like a box of chocolates" drawl again I am climbing a bell tower with a automatic rifle.
People may disagree with the above, but one thing CANNOT BE IGNORED: HOW IN THE WORLD DID FORREST GUMP BEAT THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION AT THE OSCARS? No one on this earth can tell me with a straight face that FG is a better movie. Comparing Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman's performances to Tom Hanks'is, for me , absolutely ludicrous.FG gave the American public/Oscar panel just what they wanted - Stupidity can triumph.Sad
