Short description

The celebrity kid wizard makes his DVD debut in Chris Colombus' magnificent screen version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It's a captivating fantasy romp, bubbling with visual sorcery and paranormal thrills. The performances are generally spot on: Daniel Radcliffe is a winning Potter, while Robbie Coltrane does a hugely affable Hagrid, Alan Rickman is a superbly creepy Snape, and Richard Harris is wisdom incarnate as Dumbledore. Young Rupert Grint and Emma Watson steal the show as His Potterness' garrulous sidekicks Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

All the book's magical setpieces are visualized with all the astoundingly tangible realism that the CGI wizards can muster. High points? The goblin bank, the sorting hat, the mountain troll, the three-headed dog, the breathtaking quidditch sequence, the invisibility cloak, the terrifying forest scene, the climactic chess game ... there are many. Some critics have grumbled about this film, claiming it fails to reproduce the novel's unique magic. It is a measure of how brilliant the novel is that such a stupendous movie could seem inferior by comparison.

Whilst not managing to capture every element of the book, enough of the essence is there that the experience is wonderful!

      A fun movie, poor release

This was a fun movie, but while there are many good things on the DVD release the movie itself is totally ruined by having nearly half the picture cut off. South Africa is the only country where this is the case.
