Short description

Cassim Kaif (Riaad Moosa) is a young man who works in his father Ebrahim’s (Vincent Ebrahim) material shop. In keeping with tradition it is Ebrahim’s dream that one day, his only son, Cassim will take over the family business.

Cassim however has discovered a passion and talent for stand-up comedy and is determined to follow his dream to become a comedian. Through the adventure of pursuing his new passion, he finds that it is a path that brings him into conflict with his father, who believes everything about stand-up comedy goes against age old traditions.

Set in Fordsburg, Johannesburg, MATERIAL is a funny and heart-warming film that tackles the universal issue of a young person fighting for identity in the modern world. It deals with timeless themes of destiny, responsibilty, forgiveness and ultimately the importance of family.

A feel-good movie. Funny, a tear here and there and totally enjoyable. Sit back and relax.

Funny without being stale. I loved the movie and nearly died of laughing but also shed a tear or two because it is essentially a sad story and a reminder of the hurt that group areas brought to families.
