Adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel. Margaret Hale, a southerner, has newly moved to the industrial town of Milton. When the workers of a cotton mill strike, Margaret immediately takes their side, already displaying a strong dislike for the mill's owner, John Thornton. As the conflict between Margaret and Thornton intensifies, however, Margaret finds herself doing the unspeakable...falling in love.

I discovered 'North & South' some years ago when I was scouting for other BBC series on a par with 'Pride & Prejudice', which I think is one of the best romantic comedies @#$ English literature successes ever! North & South exceeded all expectations! It had a sensational response in the UK and everyone to whom I have leant my DVD discs has been reluctant to return them to me. It is wonderful - full of history and human interest, and has a romantic ending that will knock even the most hardened sceptic sideways!! Quite frankly, it is amongst my most prized possessions and I have given it to special friends all over the world. However, it is for reasonably intelligent people - if you don't fit the description, i.e. have no interest in history, the subtleties of human relationships, etc. don't buy it ... it will be wasted on you!

This dvd was worth purchasing. A very sad, but heartwarming movie. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by this movie.
