  Prepare for Gnashing of teeth!

After achieving near cult status with the original Starship Troopers movie, the franchise seemed destined for a run of several blockbusting sequels. Despite my reservations after "ST2: Hero of the Federation", I was excited about the release of "ST3: Marauder" particularly as it was written and directed by one of writers of the first movie. In addition, the film also boasted the support of Paul Verhoeven, whose clever and original satirical tongue-in-cheek approach to the neo-fascist Federation, and the relationship between citizens and civilians. Beneath its sci-fi/action facade, Starship Troopers was a genuinely clever movie - albeit filled with some cheesy dialogue and gratuitous violence. Sadly, "ST3: Maruader" fails to achieve even a fraction of the layering of the original, opting for a ridiculous plot, that at times makes very little sense, attempting to comment on the role of religion as a tool for political obedience. What ultimately could have been a clever commentary on social consciousness/governance, ultimately fails due to the poor quality of the acting and special effects, which are both below par even by B-grade movie standards. I cannot highlight the poor standard of CGI enough, particularly towards the end of the movie. In addition, the Marauder project features for a mere five to ten minutes throughout the entire movie, with no explanation given regarding the training or features of the battlesuits - the rest of the time you are subjected to the ramblings of a overly religious air hostess and SM as they try to convert the rest of the abandoned team. In summary, the film is so badly disjointed and poorly acted that it will make you grimace and regret your purchase. Even as a big fan of the franchise, Marauder is arguably the worst film I have ever seen, surpassing even the likes of Stewart Little 2 and the Prince & Me sequels. Save your money (or else you are welcome to buy my copy...)

For fans of the series, or just fans of sci-fi, it's a great buy. The extras and commentary add a load of special interest for South Africans because the filming was done primarily in & around Cape Town. Loads of local talent, loads of respect given and earned by the local stars. Great to see Johnny Rico back in action (looking almost the same as he did in the first one!) and including Jolene Blalock as a wonderful sci-fan treat.
