The Shining

Short description

Think of the greatest terror imaginable. Is it a monstrous alien? A lethal epidemic? Or, as in this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick, is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you - a member of your own family? From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson ("Heeeere's Johnny!) plays Jack Torrance, who's come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before - or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

I have seen this movie in the theare upon it's release, and it scared the living daylights out of me then. I saw it again the other day for the 4th day, and it still managed to nail me to my chair. It surely is a horro-thriller of cult status, and continiously features in the top 20 lists of many, many film critics. It is icingly atmospheric, and ultimately scary - with a definitive and disturbing Jack Nicolson perfecting the role of the father-turned-madman. You can't love movies without wathcing this one..but not alone!

dont get me wrong, this film is one the most riveting pieces of beautiful film making ever produced. brilliant. the only reason i'm giving it such a bad rating is because its a zone2 release. bad bad bad. the brits have seen it fit to cut 30mins of the film!! can you believe it? 30mins that you are missing out on? check out www.dvdcompare.net they have all the info on cut movies - usually the brits cut the hell out of almost every film that we get! for idiotic reasons no doubt.

      Shining Brightly

The packaging leaves a lot to be desired. No little booklet and the disk face appears to have been printed by an inkjet in a Chinese sweatshop. Special features? The documentary is very good thanks to Vivian Kubrick (Stanley's daughter) and deserves an award. The film material has been wonderfully restored (Full screen and NOT widescreen unfortunately...) and the enhanced 5.1 soundtrack really scared the bejeezus out of me! About the film itself: It’s great! The plot is engaging and slow to develop. Nowadays a slow plot spells disaster but in this film it builds up tension like no other film has managed since. Nicholson is the dad that turns into a crazed, axe-wielding maniac. Shelly Duval is the hysterical homemaker that screams her way to the end and the kid appears to have a thirst for red rum!?? If a special edition is ever released with additional extras such as a director’s feature length commentary track (umm, ok maybe not) and deleted scenes I will be very sorry I didn’t purchase that instead. Still, the price is right and I highly recommend this film. Stephen King novels never had it this good!
