Bad Signal on the USB model

Nothing wrong with the Drifta product, but this USB model is problematic. Got mine from this site and after DSTVMobile customer care couldn't help me to get it working, I went to a MultiChoice dealer where I was informed they don't even sell the USB model anymore, because it doesn't get signal. The WiFi model, however works fine.
Don't know if it's only in Cape Town, but if the dealer doesn't even want to touch this stuff... Well you've been warned, unlike me who couldn't find a USB review before buying it.

My thoughts on the USB DStv Drifta

- Aww Dad, it’s so cute. Look how tiny it is compared to the old one.
- Dad, I can’t plug in the memory stick next to the Drifta.
That, in a nutshell, sums up the new USB DStv Drifta. It’s small and cute, not quite the size of a memory stick (just a tad fatter), so overlaps a second USB slot when plugged in (a cable is supplied to solve this). It works, and well, but doesn’t really cure any of the inherent problems with the first Drifta. That said, in the right scenarios it is a great device.
Back on 14 July 2011 DStv announced (officially) the new USB DStv Drifta (release here). The release and the pictures made the device look interesting. A week later their PR team mailed me and offered me a Drifta to test out and review (well, they just offered to send me one, my assumption it was to test and review).
The box it comes in is squared, about 11cmx11cm.
The Drifta itself is about 8cm long, and about 2.5cm wide. That is a fair bit smaller than the original Drifta.
Once unboxed, you simply need to install the software (if you haven’t already). In my case I have the 1.3.1 software already installed. The CD that arrived in the box still had the older 1.2 software. The USB Drifta itself comes with the latest firmware preloaded (Drifta2(DVB-H) 2.1.277 2011/05/03-14:09:23).
When plugged in the device is quite sturdy. On my laptop it happily plugged into either the side or rear facing USB port with no problem, on my desktop when connected to the front port it was in danger of being bumped by my knee or the roller chair. The USB extension cable mentioned in the parts list above is useful for just this. You can then plug it in and lie it on top of your PC case out of harms way, not to mention then be able to access the nearby USB ports instead of having them blocked. I suspect that some cases and laptops which have recessed USB ports may also require the extension cable.

Driftae Mobile USB - Limited coverage

I bought this Drifta USB in good faith I would have coverage where I am in Nottingham Road, KZN. Alas, when I phoned to activate the product, I only found out at that point the Drifta has very little coverage, and none to speak of in Nottingham Road. I bought the device for my Dell Laptop so I could watch the World Cup rugby while at my shop, but have not been able to use this device, and quit frankly would just rather have my money back!
- Poor Advertising in temrs of covergae warnings. If they not going to provide coverage in all towns and cities they should at least warn you before you make the purchase. There is a Coverage Map on the Drifta Site, which you are not made aware of at the time of purchase. Misleading!!!

I'm a little disappointed. The installation and setup is easy and the software seems good; I like the way it gives you a TV guide as well. But the resolution of the picture really is very, very bad. As an example, when watching a soccer game it's so blurry you can't read the score or team names at the top of the picture. I know it's stated up front, but I think most people (myself included) won't realise how low res 320x240 is. It's dramatically worse than your average YouTube vid. So if you can live with that, it looks like it does what it says it does. But be warned about that image...

no mac app

Spent the whole morning trying to get the usb drifta to work. the installation loaded on vista for business and windows 95, but the app would not recognize the drifta.
then loaded the software onto a laptop, and it worked perfectly. Our offices are mainly mac based, but as yet there is no software available for macs, but there is for the i-phone, and i-pad but not for the normal mac running OSX. Go figure.

Only works if you sit under a TV mast!! Tried it in several places in the Cape where we nornally pick up TV with a bunny aireal.
The Drifta always flashes green and then the dreaded "No Signal" comes on
