Epic Mickey

Long description

A heroic tale of redemption and discovery, Disney Epic Mickey is an adventure-platforming game with light role-playing elements for the Nintendo Wii, featuring an iconic and retro Mickey Mouse inspired by cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s.

Pulled into a warped Disney universe called the Cartoon Wasteland by an evil villain, Mickey finds himself in a world inhabited by the retired and forgotten cartoon characters and attractions from Disney’s past. Mickey must use the very elements of animation, paint and paint thinner, to explore the Cartoon Wasteland, find the source of evil that is destroying the land, and redeem his fellow cartoon characters including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney’s first cartoon star and Mickey’s resentful half-brother.

With visionary game designer Warren Spector behind the title, players choose their own path to defeat supreme evil, face the consequences of those decisions and ultimately free the Cartoon Wasteland.

  Great, if you don't mind 3D-platforming self-tortu

Epic Mickey arrived with big fanfare, but mixed reviews from the gaming critics, to such an extend that I almost cancelled my pre-order. Reviewers sited horrible third-person camera, over-reliance on fetch quests and tricky platforming as the cons of this title. Truthfully, and it pains me, I have to agree on these points, as the crazy camera does put one off from getting the most out of the game, and frankly, the "questing" part is really thin. However, if you get stuck on these, you'll really miss out on the excellent art design, creative use of the Disney license (they even snuck some Tron into it, YUM!) and a really charming, almost Burton-esque tale about forgotten Disney staple and lore. Admittingly I'm no Disney-buff, but I still enjoyed the cartoon platforming-transitions between stages, as well as the well-produced cutscenes and movies just brimming with clever Disney in-jokes. Platforming can be a mixed bag (especially due to the camera), and I really miss a lock-on function for enemies during the frequent combat, but your enjoyment will be based on how many platforming titles you've played (or endured) in the past. Game is also quite a looker for Wii (as long as you invest in the EDTV cable for your TV) and the music is of cinema-quality. So, if you can endure 3D-platforming (and how can a Wii-gamer not?) and are willing to struggle with a couple of stupid design choices, you are in for a charming and memorable ride!
